ChatGPT vs Claude vs Grok for business (2026)

For a team that’s about to pay for seats: seat prices and minimums, what each vendor does with your data, which admin controls come at which tier, how each one connects to your tools, and a two-week pilot to test all three on your own work. Checked against vendor pages on October 14, 2026.

Key takeaways

  1. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both cost US$20 a seat a month on annual billing (US$25 monthly), with a two-seat minimum. Grok Business is US$30 a seat with no listed minimum.
  2. None of the three trains on business-plan data by default. Personal accounts can be used for training unless the user opts out, so keep client work out of them.
  3. SSO comes with ChatGPT Business and Claude Team but only with Grok Enterprise. Grok Business has the audit and retention controls that the other two keep for Enterprise.
  4. Canadian data storage exists only on ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu (eligible new workspaces), and only at rest.
  5. Claude suits long documents, ChatGPT has the widest toolset and Grok leads on live web and X search. Pilot them on your own work before buying for everyone.

The short answer

ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both cost US$20 a seat a month (annual), need two seats, include SSO and don’t train on your data. Pick Claude for long documents, ChatGPT for the broadest toolset, and add Grok Business (US$30) for live web and X research.

For health, financial or other regulated client data, decide on admin and data controls rather than features, and expect to need an Enterprise tier.

Prices and seat rules (October 2026)

US dollars, per seat per month, before tax, from each vendor’s pages on October 14, 2026. ChatGPT Team was renamed ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025, so “ChatGPT Team vs Claude Team” comparisons describe these same two plans.

ChatGPT Business vs Claude Team: same price, different limits

Both cost US$20 a seat on annual billing (US$25 monthly) with a two-seat minimum. Claude Team stops at 150 seats, ChatGPT Business at 200. Claude Team adds up to US$500 a month in pooled API credits for anyone building on Claude’s API. ChatGPT seats include Codex and ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s agent for longer jobs.

What a six-person team pays in a year

Yearly cost of ChatGPT Business, Claude Team and Grok Business for a six-person team
SeatsPer year (USD)
ChatGPT Business or Claude Team, annual6 Standard × $20 × 12$1,440
Grok Business6 × $30 × 12$2,160
ChatGPT Business, annual, two heavy users(4 Standard × $20 + 2 Premium × $100) × 12$3,360

Heavy users cost more than the seat price. On ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Work, workspace agents and the Office add-ins draw on a shared usage pool, then on paid workspace credits. Claude Team’s extra usage is billed at API rates, and self-serve Claude Enterprise runs on prepaid credits that stop when they run out.

Start everyone on Standard. Both OpenAI and Anthropic let you mix seat types, so upgrade only the people who hit limits every week.

Notes for Canadian buyers

OpenAI and Anthropic both say pricing varies by country. From Toronto on October 14, 2026, Claude’s pricing page showed Team Standard at $28 (annual) or $35 (monthly) and Premium at $140 or $175, with no currency label, which matches Canadian-dollar pricing. Trust the checkout figure. Prices exclude GST/HST (see the FAQ).

Self-serve ChatGPT Business and Claude Team take credit cards only; invoicing needs ChatGPT Enterprise or a sales-assisted Claude plan. Self-serve Claude Enterprise bills in US dollars only, by card or ACH. Nonprofits can get up to 75% off ChatGPT Business or Enterprise through OpenAI for Nonprofits.

OpenAI cut Business prices by US$5 in April 2026 and added Premium seats in August, so recheck before you commit to an annual term.

Where each one is strongest

We set up all three for clients, and these notes come from that work plus each vendor’s feature list. We don’t quote benchmark scores or model names. Leaderboards don’t measure your kind of work, and models change every few months.

ChatGPT Business: the widest toolkit

A Business seat bundles the most: Projects, Deep Research, agent mode, image generation, Codex, ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step jobs, and company knowledge, which searches your connected apps and cites sources. It adds Excel, PowerPoint and Word add-ins, a Google Sheets sidebar, an @ChatGPT bot for Slack and Teams, and Outlook actions in shared mailboxes.

OpenAI changes the Business plan almost weekly, and in September 2026 it announced plans to retire custom GPTs in favour of plugins. Give one person an hour a month to read the release notes and check admin settings.

Claude Team: long documents and careful writing

Anthropic’s pricing page lists context windows of up to 1 million tokens on some models (its Team help page still says 200K). That’s room for long contracts, policy manuals and transcripts in one conversation, though a big tender package may need splitting. In our experience Claude is the pick when output has to follow a long brief closely: proposals, policy rewrites, contract summaries.

Team seats include Claude Code, Cowork, shared Projects, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace connectors, and add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook that can pass work between apps once an owner allows it. Admin depth is the gap: SCIM, audit logs and custom retention are Enterprise-only.

Grok Business: live web and X search

Grok’s edge is live search across the web and X, which suits whoever tracks competitors, price news or public sentiment. Its connectors read and write Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, send Outlook email, and reach SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Salesforce, Notion, GitHub and Linear. On Business and Enterprise, an admin provisions each connector in xAI’s console first.

Grok Business launched on December 30, 2025. xAI rebranded as SpaceXAI in July 2026 and its business page is now titled “SpaceXSI for Business”, so expect new names at checkout and check which entity your agreement is with.

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini and Copilot

If you already pay for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, check what’s included before buying a third tool. Prices are per user a month, before tax, from Google’s and Microsoft’s Canadian pages.

Microsoft 365 Business Standard with CopilotMicrosoft 365 apps, Teams and Copilot in one bundle$31.90, paid yearly

Built-in assistants work best inside their own apps, like drafting in Gmail or Word. ChatGPT and Claude are stronger for research, long documents and work across tools, so a common split is Gemini or Copilot for the inbox plus one of the three for heavier work.

From OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI business, pricing and privacy pages, October 2026.

The self-serve tiers of ChatGPT and Claude give you SSO but no audit logs or retention settings, and Grok Business is the reverse. SCIM and audit logs need an Enterprise plan on ChatGPT and Claude, and Claude’s self-serve Enterprise starts at 20 seats.

What “no training” doesn’t cover

Personal accounts are the biggest gap. OpenAI may train on Free, Plus and Pro content unless the user opts out, and Claude’s individual plans and personal Grok work the same way. A client file pasted into a personal account is a bigger risk than any vendor setting.

Feedback is the second. Anthropic may train on chats rated with a thumbs up or down, and keeps them for up to five years. Owners can switch chat rating off under Organization settings > Data and Privacy > Rate chats.

No training doesn’t mean deletion. ChatGPT and Claude keep custom retention settings for Enterprise.

Can any of them keep data in Canada?

Only OpenAI offers Canadian storage, and only for eligible new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Conversations and files are stored at rest in Canada, but in-region processing is offered only in the US, Europe and the UAE, and Business isn’t eligible. Anthropic stores Claude data in the US; Canadian regions exist only through AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud, a custom-build route. xAI lists no Canadian option. For most small businesses, the data leaves Canada.

Connectors, MCP and agents

A connector lets the assistant read from, and sometimes act in, your other software. All three reach the big office suites; they differ on admin control and write access. Names differ too: OpenAI renamed ChatGPT connectors to apps in December 2025 and moved its directory into Plugins in July 2026, while Claude and Grok still call them connectors.

What MCP is

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard Anthropic released in November 2024 for plugging AI assistants into other software. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all accept custom MCP servers, so a connector built for your own system isn’t tied to one vendor.

Agents that run on their own

ChatGPT’s workspace agents became generally available in Business on May 21, 2026. They follow a team process, run on a schedule or in Slack, and can ask before sending an email. Since July 6, 2026 their runs are priced by tokens from the shared usage pool, so check OpenAI’s rate card before scheduling anything.

When a job must run every time without anyone opening a chat, like logging every inbound call, build an automation instead. Lane, our dispatch system for a Toronto home-services company, works that way: a phone line and AI voice agent feeding a CRM, with Telegram alerts. See what an AI agent is for where the line sits.

Connector safety checklist

  • Review the app list on day one. Apps are on by default in ChatGPT Business.
  • Start read-only and add write access one action at a time.
  • Use each person’s own login. A connector on a shared API key gives everyone that key’s access.
  • Only add MCP servers you trust. Anthropic warns a malicious server can hide instructions (prompt injection).
  • Keep approval on for sending email, editing shared files and anything involving money.

This is the setup we do in our Grok, ChatGPT and Claude setup service.

Run a 2-week pilot before you buy

Test on your own work before committing to an annual plan. Monthly seats keep it cheap.

  1. Pick three weekly tasks. A document job (summarize a supplier contract), a writing job (reply to a quote request) and a research job (what did a competitor change this month?).
  2. Pick three to five people who do those tasks today.
  3. Buy monthly seats in business workspaces only. Three people on all three tools for a month: 3 × $25 + 3 × $25 + 3 × $30 = US$240 before tax.
  4. Give every tool the same input. Same file, same instructions, written once.
  5. Write the decision rule on day one, for example “keep the tool with the biggest time saving on the contract task and no factual errors.”
  6. Log every attempt in the scorecard below, then decide on day 14 and cancel the seats you won’t keep.

Pilot scorecard

Copy these columns into a shared sheet and add a row for every attempt: one task, one tool, one person.

  • Time each task once without AI for an honest baseline.
  • Include review and correction time, or the saving looks bigger than it is.
  • Log every wrong fact, price or name. One wrong price in a quote costs more than the minutes saved.
  • Ask why people would keep a tool. They keep using the one they like.

Canadian privacy: what stays your job

The vendor’s terms cover how it handles your data. Under PIPEDA, what staff paste into the tool is still your business’s responsibility. General information, not legal advice:

  • In Ontario and most provinces, PIPEDA keeps your business accountable for personal information it passes to a vendor for processing. Alberta, British Columbia and Québec have their own private-sector laws.
  • The Privacy Commissioner’s generative AI principles say to put personal information in a prompt only where authorized, and to use de-identified data where you can.
  • Québec’s Law 25 requires a privacy impact assessment and a written agreement before personal information goes outside the province (section 17), plus an assessment for new information-system projects (section 3.3). A US-hosted assistant used for client work will usually trigger both.
  • CASL applies to a marketing email whoever drafts it: you need consent, sender identification and a working unsubscribe.
  • Your privacy policy should say that service providers may process information outside Canada.

On June 11, 2026, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that X Corp. and xAI violated PIPEDA by launching Grok’s image-generation tool without proper safeguards. That concerns the public image tool, not Grok Business, but it belongs in your vendor review. For call recordings and cross-border processing, see our Canadian privacy rules for AI on the phone.

How to roll it out

  1. Write a one-page acceptable-use policy before anyone gets a seat (sample below).
  2. Choose the plan by the admin controls you need, and turn on SSO if the plan has it.
  3. Review apps and connectors on day one. Switch off what you don’t need and set the rest to read-only.
  4. Turn off chat rating where the plan allows. In Claude, an owner does it under Organization settings > Data and Privacy > Rate chats, so rated chats can’t end up in training data.
  5. Build shared context. A Project per team with your services, pricing rules, tone and templates. On ChatGPT, use Projects or plugins rather than a new custom GPT.
  6. Train on real tasks, with someone on hand in week one.
  7. Measure minutes per task against the pilot baseline.
  8. Review after 30 days. Expand, switch tools, or move a repeating task into an automation.

Sample acceptable-use policy

Copy it, fill in the brackets and have everyone sign it.

Acceptable-use policy

Use only the company’s [ChatGPT Business / Claude Team / Grok Business] workspace for work. Never put company or client information into a personal AI account. Never enter Social Insurance Numbers, health information, payment card numbers, banking details or passwords. Client documents go in only when the client agreement allows it. Don’t rate chats that contain client information. You’re responsible for checking AI output before it reaches a client, especially prices, dates, names and anything legal, medical or financial. Marketing emails written with AI follow the same consent rules (CASL) as any other. Questions go to [name].

Questions buyers ask

Is ChatGPT Business worth it over ChatGPT Plus?

Yes, once the work involves company or client information. Plus is US$20 a month for one person, billed monthly. A Business Standard seat costs the same on annual billing (US$25 monthly), with a two-seat minimum, and adds no training on your data by default, a shared workspace, SSO and admin control over connected apps.

Does Claude Team train on our data?

Not by default. Anthropic says it doesn’t train on inputs or outputs from commercial products, which include Team and Enterprise. The exception is chats someone rates or reports, and owners can switch rating off.

Claude Team vs Enterprise: what’s the difference?

Enterprise adds SCIM provisioning, audit logs, custom data retention and role-based access. Self-serve Enterprise needs at least 20 seats, bills annually in US dollars only, and costs US$20 a seat plus usage at API rates, bought upfront as credits that stop when they run out. Team covers 2 to 150 seats at a fixed price per seat.

Is Grok safe for business use?

Grok Business promises no training on your data, lists SOC 2 Type II and includes audit and retention controls, but SSO and SCIM are Enterprise-only. We’d use it for research on public information. For client data, use Grok Enterprise (SSO, SCIM and the Vault add-on for your own encryption keys) and read the agreement.

Does Grok Business have a minimum number of seats?

xAI doesn’t list one. It prices Grok Business at US$30 per user a month for small-to-medium teams, so a seat or two beside your main tool is a realistic setup. Confirm at checkout.

Grok Business vs SuperGrok: which one?

SuperGrok is xAI’s personal subscription: higher limits and multi-agent reasoning for one person, with no team admin. xAI may train on personal Grok content unless you switch off “Improve the model” or use Private Chat, and says it doesn’t train on business content. Personal tiers change often (grok.com/plans showed Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra in Canadian dollars from Toronto on October 14, 2026). For company data, use Grok Business.

Should a small team pay for two tools?

Many do: one tool for everyone, plus a seat or two of another for a specific job. Five ChatGPT Business seats (annual) plus one Grok Business seat is (5 × $20 + $30) × 12 = US$1,560 a year before usage charges. If the second tool is Claude Team or ChatGPT Business, the two-seat minimum applies.

Which works best with Outlook and Google Drive?

All three connect to both within each person’s permissions (see the connector table). ChatGPT also works in shared Outlook mailboxes and calendars, and Claude adds an Outlook add-in. If you run on one suite, add Gemini or Copilot to the pilot.

Do the prices include Canadian sales tax?

No. Under the CRA’s digital-economy rules, foreign vendors charge GST/HST to Canadian customers who aren’t registered for it. A registered business that gives the vendor proof of registration generally shouldn’t be charged. Ask your bookkeeper how to handle each invoice.
