Costs & pricing
How much does an AI receptionist cost in Canada?
For 300 calls a month, the AI receptionist plans we priced cost $129 to $500 USD ($184 to $713 CAD) before GST/HST. Most bill in US dollars and meter minutes, calls or callers, so which one is cheapest depends on how your calls run.
Key takeaways
- Published plans start at $29 USD a month (about $41 CAD) and reach $299 to $500 USD before custom pricing.
- For 300 calls a month, the AI plans we priced cost $129 to $500 USD ($184 to $713 CAD). How each vendor counts usage decides the order.
- Match the billing unit to your calls: per minute suits short calls, per call suits long ones, per unique caller suits repeat callers.
- A custom voice agent runs about $81 USD a month in phone and voice minutes at 300 calls, before AI model usage and a one-time build.
- Prices are almost always USD before GST/HST. On October 14, 2026, $100 USD was $142.63 CAD.
AI receptionist cost per month: the short answer
An AI receptionist costs $29 to $500 USD a month on published small-business plans (about $41 to $713 CAD), before GST/HST. For 300 calls a month, the AI plans we priced cost $129 to $500 USD. Free tiers exist (25 calls on Smith.ai, 15 minutes on ElevenLabs), but they’re too small for a business line.
| What you pay for | Published price | Suits | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan-based AI receptionist | A monthly plan with set minutes, calls or callers, plus overage | $29 to $500 USD a month on published tiers | Owners who want it answering this week |
| Add-on to software you already use | A small add-on to your field-service or phone-system plan | Jobber Receptionist $29 USD, or RingCentral AI Receptionist $39 USD on RingEX | Businesses already on that software, since it books into the same calendar |
| Custom voice agent | Phone minutes, a voice-agent platform and AI model usage, plus a one-time build | About $81 USD a month in minutes at 300 calls (breakdown) | Calls that must become jobs in a specific CRM or dispatch board |
We build the third kind, so we have a stake in it. When a plan or add-on does the job, we say so. Our own builds are quoted after a free 30-minute call.
AI receptionist pricing: published plans from 8 services (October 2026)
Every figure below is from the vendor’s own pricing page on October 14, 2026. Jobber and Dialzara state USD. The others show a dollar sign on a US page, so treat them as USD until the vendor confirms otherwise. None include GST/HST.
| Type | Price per month (USD) | Included | Extra usage | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jobber Receptionist | AI add-on | $29, or included on the Plus plan | 30 conversations (calls or texts), unlimited on Plus | $0.79 per conversation |
| RingCentral AI Receptionist | AI, standalone or add-on | $49 standalone, or $39 as a RingEX add-on | 100 minutes | $0.50 per minute, billed in 30-second increments |
| Dialzara | AI | $29, $99, $199 or $349 | 60, 220, 500 or 1,000 minutes | $0.48, $0.45, $0.40 or $0.35 per minute |
| Goodcall | AI | $79, $129 or $299 | 100, 500 or 2,000 unique customers | $0.79, $0.26 or $0.15 per extra customer, no per-minute charge |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | AI | Free, Pro from $150, Enterprise from $500 | 25, 75 or 300 calls | $3.00, $2.50 or $2.17 per extra call |
| Smith.ai virtual receptionists | Human-first | $300, $810 or $2,100 | 30, 90 or 300 calls | $11.50, $10.50 or $8.50 per extra call, plus $1.50 per booking |
| Ruby | Human | $250 to $1,725 | 50 to 500 minutes | Not published |
| ElevenLabs Agents | Build-your-own platform | $6 to $990 across five tiers | 75 to 12,375 minutes | $0.08 per minute, with the phone line and AI model usage billed separately |
Jobber’s add-on needs a Jobber plan (Core starts at $29 USD a month billed annually, for one user) and a Jobber dedicated phone number, which is available in Canada. RingCentral’s Canadian pricing page doesn’t list AI Receptionist prices, so these are its US prices. Prices change often, so check the vendor’s page before you sign.
Per minute, per call or per caller: which costs less for your calls
Vendors count usage four ways. Which is cheapest depends on how long your calls run and how often the same people call back. Some sell the same product as an AI answering service, so compare the meter, not the name.
- Per minute RingCentral, Dialzara, Ruby, ElevenLabs
- Cheap when calls are short bookings, expensive when a caller spends eight minutes describing a leak.
- Per call Smith.ai
- A long call costs the same as a short one, so troubleshooting calls are good value and 40-second “are you open Saturday?” calls are not.
- Per conversation Jobber
- A call, or a text thread within 24 hours, counts once. Spam and “no conversation” calls don’t count.
- Per unique caller Goodcall
- A customer who calls three times about the same job counts once.
Price your own month of calls
The table starts at 300 calls a month averaging 3 minutes, from 250 different callers. Change the numbers to match your call log. CAD uses the Bank of Canada rate of 1.4263 for October 14, 2026.
Your call volume
900 minutes a month. Cheapest AI plan: Goodcall at $129 USD (about $184 CAD).
| Plan that fits | USD a month | About CAD a month | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodcall | Growth (500 unique customers) | $129 | $184 |
| Jobber Receptionist | $29 add-on + 270 extra conversations at $0.79 | $242 + your Jobber plan | $346 + plan |
| Dialzara | Business Elite (1,000 minutes) | $349 | $498 |
| RingCentral AI Receptionist | $49 standalone + 800 extra minutes at $0.50 | $449 | $640 |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | Enterprise (300 calls) | $500 | $713 |
| Custom agent (ElevenLabs + Twilio) | Twilio number and minutes, ElevenLabs agent minutes | $81 + model usage | $115 + model usage |
| Smith.ai virtual receptionists (human-first) | Pro (300 calls) + $1.50 booking on each call | $2,550 | $3,637 |
RingCentral’s figure is the pay-as-you-go worst case: it also sells extra-minute bundles but doesn’t publish their prices. Smith.ai’s 150- and 500-call bundles use its published per-call rates. Texts would add to Jobber’s count.
For the same 300 calls, the cheapest AI plan costs $129 and the most expensive $500. Change the call length and the order changes. At 8 minutes a call (2,400 minutes), RingCentral’s pay-as-you-go line becomes $49 plus 2,300 minutes at $0.50, or $1,199, while Smith.ai stays at $500 because it charges per call.
The cheapest line isn’t automatically the right one. Goodcall caps how many tools you can connect per tier, Jobber only books into Jobber, and none of these numbers say how well the agent handles your callers. Shortlist on billing fit, then test on real calls.
Overage traps to check
- RingCentral rounds call time up to the next 30 seconds, so a 61-second call bills as 90 seconds.
- Smith.ai lets you remove up to 10% of calls flagged as spam each billing cycle, and Jobber doesn’t count spam. Ask every other vendor how robocalls are billed.
- On Jobber’s add-on you choose what happens at 30 conversations: pay $0.79 each or pause. A paused Receptionist only takes messages. It can’t book or reschedule until your next billing cycle.
- Busy months are predictable. A furnace company knows January and a lawn-care company knows May, so price the next tier against the overage rate before the season starts.
- Ask how many calls the agent takes at once. ElevenLabs allows 10 concurrent calls on Creator and 20 on Pro. Past that, burst calls cost double ($0.16 a minute), up to three times your limit.
What a custom voice agent costs to run
A custom agent is assembled from parts you pay for directly. Our Lane dispatch system works this way: an ElevenLabs voice agent behind a business phone line, writing each job into a CRM and alerting the owner on Telegram. Here is the same 300-call month (900 minutes) priced from published rates.
| Published rate | USD a month | |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian local number (Twilio) | $1.15 a month | $1.15 |
| Inbound minutes (Twilio) | $0.0085 a minute × 900 | $7.65 |
| Agent minutes (ElevenLabs) | $0.08 a minute on every paid tier: Creator’s $22 covers 275 minutes, then 625 × $0.08 | $72.00 |
| AI model usage | Billed separately by ElevenLabs and priced per model. Silence on the line is billed at 5% of the rate. | Depends on the model |
| Total before AI model usage | About $115 CAD at 1.4263 | $80.80 |
Twilio bills in US dollars, and CAD isn’t one of its billing currencies. A bigger ElevenLabs tier doesn’t lower the minute price. It raises how many calls the agent takes at once. Outbound calls ($0.014 a minute) and Twilio’s own transcription ($0.05 a minute) cost extra if you use them.
At this volume the minutes cost under $100 USD a month. The money goes into the build (agent design, knowledge writing, integrations and testing) and into keeping the agent’s answers current as your prices and services change. If a plan already books into your calendar, a custom agent won’t pay back. A custom agent pays off when each call has to become a job in a specific CRM or dispatch board, the way Lane’s calls do. That’s the work behind our AI receptionist service and wider business process automation.
Costs that don’t show on the pricing page
The biggest one is your own time. The rest are small on their own and add up.
| Typical amount | How to keep it down | |
|---|---|---|
| Writing the agent’s knowledge | Your hours up front: service area, prices you’ll quote, booking and handoff rules | Start from your website FAQ and the questions in two weeks of voicemails |
| Integrations | Often a higher tier. Goodcall connects one external tool on Starter and five on Growth. | Confirm which plan books into your calendar or CRM before you compare prices |
| Keeping your number | Your carrier may charge for call forwarding. Jobber also needs its own dedicated number. | Forward rather than port, so leaving stays easy |
| Test calls | Billed like real calls on minute-based plans | Test during a free trial: 14 days on RingCentral, 7 on Dialzara |
| Transcript review | About $325 a month: one hour a week at $75 an hour | Review weekly for the first month or two, then spot-check |
| Currency and tax | The day’s exchange rate, any card foreign-transaction fee, and GST/HST (see the FAQ) | Pay with a card that has no foreign-transaction fee |
| Cancellation | Smith.ai’s AI plan needs 30 days’ notice. Annual prepay is cheaper and harder to exit. | Stay monthly until the agent has proved itself |
| Recordings | Twilio charges $0.0025 a minute to record and $0.0005 a minute per month to store | Record only what you need, set a retention period and let callers decline (see the vendor questions) |
| Text confirmations | Carrier fees, such as the $0.0083 per segment Dialzara passes through | Keep texts to confirmations. Under CASL, a text that only confirms a booking the caller asked for needs no consent, but it still needs your business name, contact details and an unsubscribe option. Promotional texts need consent. |
Is an AI receptionist worth it? Work it out with your own numbers
Ignore vendor ROI claims. What matters is whether the calls you miss today are worth more than the plan plus your time. The example figures below are ours. Replace them with yours.
What your missed calls are worth (CAD)
With the example inputs, 6 extra jobs bring in $960 a month, which leaves $451 after the plan and your time. With 5 missed calls a month, the same plan returns about $120 and doesn’t pay on missed calls alone. Be conservative with the close rate, since some callers hang up on any automated voice.
For how a plumbing, HVAC or electrical shop wires this into dispatch and follow-up, see our guide to AI for home service businesses.
AI receptionist vs a human receptionist or answering service: cost
Job Bank puts the median receptionist wage in the Toronto Region at $20.00 an hour (updated November 19, 2025, from 2023-24 survey data). Full time, that’s about $41,600 a year, or $3,467 a month in wages, before CPP, EI and vacation pay. Covering all 168 hours of a week would take about 4.2 full-time people.
| How it’s priced | Cost at 300 calls a month | |
|---|---|---|
| In-house receptionist, Toronto | Hourly wage, business hours only | About $3,467 CAD in wages for one full-time person |
| Human answering service | Per call or per minute | $2,100 USD + $1.50 per booked call on Smith.ai’s human-first Pro plan: about $2,550 USD ($3,637 CAD) for 300 bookings |
| AI receptionist | Per minute, call, conversation or caller | $129 to $500 USD (about $184 to $713 CAD) on the AI plans above |
A front-desk hire also greets walk-ins and calms upset clients in person, and no phone agent replaces that. Smith.ai’s human plans work out to about $8.50 to $11.50 per booked call. The setup we recommend most often is AI first, with urgent or sensitive calls transferred to a person. Our comparison of AI receptionists, answering services and voicemail covers how each one handles a call.
Questions to ask any vendor before you sign
Ask these in writing and keep the answers with the contract.
- Where are recordings and transcripts stored and processed, and will you put that in the contract?
- Can recording be switched off, what is the default retention, and will you delete a recording on request?
- Can a caller who doesn’t want to be recorded still book, for example by continuing unrecorded or getting an online booking link?
- Does the greeting say the caller is talking to an AI and that the call is recorded, and can we edit it?
- Does it handle French and the other languages our callers use?
- How does it transfer to a person, and what happens when nobody picks up?
- Which calendar, CRM or field-service tool does it book into directly, and on which plan?
- What’s the minimum term and notice period, and is there an annual prepay?
- What’s the overage rate, and are spam, hang-ups and test calls billed?
- How many calls can it take at once, and what happens to the next caller?
- Who owns the phone number, and can we port it out if we leave?
- Can we export call logs, recordings and transcripts in bulk?
- Do you bill in USD or CAD, and are you registered for GST/HST under the simplified or the normal regime?
Two of these carry legal weight. Under PIPEDA you stay accountable for personal information a vendor processes for you, so get the storage answer in writing. The Privacy Commissioner also says customers must be given a choice about whether their voice is recorded, with an alternative when recording isn’t integral to the service. Most AI receptionists keep a recording or transcript of every call, so settle this before launch.
Quebec adds duties on automated decisions and French service, covered in our guide to Canadian rules for AI receptionists. If the agent will also place calls, check the CRTC’s rules first: a business can use an automatic dialing-announcing device (a robocall) for a sales call only with the person’s prior express consent, and the CRTC opened a review of those rules in June 2026.
AI receptionist cost FAQ
Is there a free AI receptionist?
Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist has a free plan with 25 calls a month ($3.00 per extra call). ElevenLabs has a free tier with 15 minutes, enough to build and test an agent. Goodcall lets you build a demo agent free and charges once you connect a phone number. Free tiers are sized for testing: 25 calls or 15 minutes won’t cover a business line.
Are there setup fees or overage charges?
Setup fees are rare on published plans. Smith.ai’s human plans list no setup fees, Ruby says it charges nothing for activation, onboarding or setup, and Dialzara bills monthly with no setup fee. Smith.ai’s AI Pro and Enterprise plans include onboarding without a separate published fee. Overage is where bills grow: every plan in the price table charges for usage past its allowance (Ruby doesn’t publish its rate), except Jobber’s Plus plan. A custom agent has a one-time build cost, which we quote after the free call.
Are AI receptionist prices in US dollars?
Mostly. Jobber and Dialzara state USD, the others list dollar prices on US pages, and RingCentral’s Canadian page doesn’t list AI Receptionist prices at all. Convert at the day’s Bank of Canada rate (1.4263 on October 14, 2026).
Do I pay GST/HST on a US vendor?
It depends on how the vendor is registered. If you’re GST/HST-registered and the vendor is on the CRA’s simplified GST/HST registry for digital services, give it proof of your registration when you sign up. Otherwise it charges the tax, and the CRA says you then can’t claim it back as an input tax credit or rebate. A vendor registered under the normal regime charges GST/HST like a Canadian supplier, and you claim it as an input tax credit the usual way. For a vendor that isn’t registered at all, ask your accountant.
Can I try before committing?
Yes. RingCentral offers a 14-day free trial, Dialzara a 7-day trial, Goodcall a free demo agent and Smith.ai a free AI plan. Smith.ai’s human-first plans carry a money-back guarantee for new clients, up to $1,000 and excluding overage. Its plans page says 30 days and its FAQ mentions the first two weeks, so confirm the window before you start. Whichever you try, call it yourself at 9 p.m. and book a job. Call back as a customer angry about a no-show. Then ask for a price you don’t publish and see whether it refuses.
How much does Jobber’s AI Receptionist cost, and what does it include?
$29 USD a month for 30 conversations, $0.79 each after that, and unlimited on the Plus plan ($399 USD a month billed annually, for five users). It answers calls and texts 24/7, answers questions, takes detailed requests and books jobs into your Jobber calendar, within limits you set. You need a Jobber plan and a Jobber dedicated phone number, which your existing number can forward to.
How fast can it go live?
A plan-based product can answer as soon as your number forwards to it. The slow part is writing the knowledge and testing it on real calls. A custom agent connected to your CRM and calendar takes longer. We give you a timeline with the written plan and fixed quote after the free call.
